Buttocks Bioplasty: How does it work?

May 11, 2018

What is volume made of if not contouring, firmness and definition?

It is our aim to clarify misunderstandings, doubts and dissipate those unfounded fears that exist about this dermal filler, all of them having arisen from the disinformation due to publications and videos that try to demonize and discredit the use of PMMA in Aesthetic Medicine describing it as a dangerous product trying to make comparisons that border on the absurd to the point of equating PMMA to those water gel beads that are used in flower pots.

Polymethylmethacrylate (a.k.a. PMMA) is a versatile substance with multiple uses in modern industry.

This is particularly true in medical sciences due to its high degree of biocompatibility being used in intraocular and contact lenses manufacturing, bone cement, orthopedic prostheses and so on.

In aesthetic medicine, PMMA is used to manufacture dermal fillers due to the possibility of obtaining microscopic spheres of thousandths of an inch size, not visible to the human eye, which have the property to stimulate the formation of fibroblasts, collagen and elastin, key components of the connective tissue which is essential to provide volume and elasticity to the areas to be treated.

These tiny microspheres are mixed with a biocompatible substance serving as a vehicle to transport them to the site chosen by the doctor. PMMA microspheres and the vehicle form a so called “biphasic gel”.

There are basically three vehicles to transport the PMMA microspheres, namely, bovine collagen, hyaluronic acid and carboxymethylcellulose.

Hyaluronic acid and bovine collagen both have severe disadvantages as carriers of PMMA microspheres in Buttocks Bioplasty.

On one hand they do not offer enough consistency to be able to expand the tissues of the gluteal area and create volume, firmness and definition.

On the other, they are resorbed pretty quickly by the body, disappearing within 4 to 8 months hence leaving microspheres without the necessary cushioning and protection to allow them to be surrounded by the new tissue formation , thus strengthening and expanding existing tissues.

Finally, both hyaluronic acid and collagen are very expensive substances, therefore not viable for glutes bioplasty which requires a substantial amount of dermal filler.

At The Bioplasty International Center we use the original product from Brazil which is based on carboxymethylcellulose as the vehicle to transport the microspheres. This substance has an adequate consistency and an excellent biocompatibility; additionally it has a much longer life-span than collagen and hyaluronic acid; these properties allow the dermal filler acting as a tissue expander, increasing anatomical capacity as well as replenishing volume and strengthening tissues internally.

The instillation into the buttocks of this PMMA-based expander produces muscular contraction especially in buttocks with a high percentage of muscle mass with respect to adipose tissue or when inner anatomical space is quite limited. However the muscular contraction effect disappears within a few weeks of the infiltration when the tissues finally relax.

We notice with concern that, even when consumers are well informed about the dangers and adverse effects that silicone has on the organism and certainly prefer silicone-free products, they are still much influenced by the illegal injectors rhetoric that for decades have been repeating that volume of buttocks is something that can be increased at will, only depending on available budget.

The false belief of being able to inflate buttocks ad infinitum is the result of the brainwashing that has led people to believe that definition, firmness, consistency and contouring of buttocks is not what matters but size.

Unfortunately we are immersed in a culture that hides the risks of inflating buttocks, trampling on medical criteria; then complications arise such as necrosis when hampering blood circulation inside tissues, which are forced to expand aggressively; results are drastic: darkened areas, tromboembolism, heavy buttocks that tend to fall by force of gravity and all the side effects that these reactions entail for the body, the immune system, the kidneys and the liver apart from the migration of the excess of filler that is forced by the pressure to find an escape route.

PMMA microspheres and carboxymethylcellulose is considered a long lasting soft biocompatible filler offering protection and cushioning to the microspheres until they promote the internal reinforcement of the tissues. A minimum of 6-7 years of intact presence is guaranteed by this high quality product; it never disappears as it promotes the growth of new tissues, there is no resorption as such but intelligent interaction with the human body.

At this point we consider we should make an important remark: it is totally false that the PMMA microspheres produce lumps or bumps; their microscopic size and perfect spherical shape would not allow for it. Their function is only to serve as seeds that trigger the production of new connective tissue, i.e. collagen, elastin and fibroblasts.

Bioplasty is not a system based on indiscriminately filling buttocks, instead a way of promoting definition, firmness, inner strength of the tissues as well as improving and enhancing shape and contour of the overall gluteal area.
